With the energy transition comes an enormous need for digitisation and reliable data. Even with the smart meter rollout, utility companies worldwide will still rely on the human eye for billions of manual meter readings of traditional meters and non-communicating smart meters. This data is used for billing and for the registration of newly installed smart meters, but is prone to human errors. Physical house visits by field operators are costly, time-consuming and non-sustainable.
That's why we have developed Blicker, the intelligent meter readout assistant that captures meter data (meter readings, bar codes, serial numbers) by simply taking a photo. The customer or field worker takes a photo of the electricity, gas, or water meter, and Blicker’s technology applies AI to provide high-precision meter readings, in real-time, with an accuracy of 99.8% (certified by the Netherlands Measurement Institute).
This benefits not only the utility companies by improving data quality and reducing a lot of human actions and costs, but it also greatly benefits their customers by reducing the number of required actions and contact moments from the customer service team.
We’re currently scaling commercial efforts internationally. Blicker is being used to process over 5 million meters on a monthly basis, from over 22 utility companies based in 5 different countries, including energy/gas retailers, water companies, Distribution System / Grid operators, and more.

Digitize, Centralize and Virtualize
Our products and services are unique building blocks for Digitized, Centralized and Virtualized substation automation. By providing super simple and easy to install sensors (Process Interface Units) combined with highly intuitive Centralized Merging Unit software the basics are set for the software defined substation.
This new approach leads to a complete different set-up, no copper wiring, but fiber optics, no IED on every bay but centrally, or fully virtual IEDs on a server.
This redefining of the substation is something we have many years of experience with and which is operational at 200 substations in the world. Now our new generation of products are in the pipeline, fully based on the IEC61850 standard. So, interoperable and exchangeable with other products is guaranteed.

Whiffle’s highly advanced weather model makes renewable energy production more predictable. Optimized by artificial intelligence and machine learning, the company offers the world’s first operational weather model based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The calculations of the weather model are run on graphic processing units (GPUs), allowing local turbulence and underlying processes and conditions in the atmosphere to be captured with unprecedented detail.
The model calculates wind speed and solar irradiation with horizontal resolutions of 10’s of meters, including all effects of the surroundings: vegetation, landscape, sea state, obstacles, wake, and blockage effects. More accurate weather forecasting lowers imbalance risk and costs for energy companies. The model can also be used to optimize the configuration of wind farms and better predict future energy yields: aspects that are important for lowering financing costs and increasing annual yields.
Whiffle was founded in 2015, starting as a spin out of the Dutch Delft University of Technology. With its roots in science, the company continues to use cutting edge R&D to further develop Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models and its unique implementation on high performance computing systems. Application areas of Whiffle's model include wind and solar power projects, dispersion of air pollution, aviation, and agriculture.
