Opportunities in Norway
Norway is leading the maritime industry’s transition to zero-emission shipping through innovative solutions like hydrogen-powered vessels and full electrification. The MF Hydra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered ferry, and the Yara Birkeland, a fully autonomous electric container ship, demonstrate Norway’s commitment to reducing maritime emissions. These vessels utilize battery and hydrogen fuel cell technologies, cutting CO₂ emissions while enhancing operational efficiency.
Additionally, Norway is investing in shore power infrastructure, enabling ships to switch off their engines while docked, reducing fuel consumption and air pollution in major ports like Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger.
Beyond electrification, Norway is advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) for ships, with projects like Longship paving the way for large-scale maritime carbon sequestration. This technology enables vessels to trap CO₂ emissions before they are released, helping shipping companies comply with strict environmental regulations.
At the same time, smart shipping solutions—such as autonomous navigation, AI-driven route optimization, and sensor-based monitoring—are transforming maritime logistics, increasing efficiency, and reducing human error. These innovations position Norway as a global leader in sustainable, autonomous, and low-emission maritime solutions.
In September 2023, Rotterdam and Oslo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the green transition in maritime transport by establishing a "Green Corridor" for short sea shipping. A key initiative is the deployment of Samskip's zero-emission SeaShuttle vessels, powered by green hydrogen, set to begin operations between Rotterdam and Oslofjord by late 2025. The MoU promotes collaboration on shore power, hydrogen, and green marine fuels, reinforcing both cities' climate goals and leadership in sustainable shipping. This partnership strengthens their longstanding relationship and serves as a model for emissions-free maritime transport.
Nor-Shipping
Nor-Shipping is vital for maritime companies as it serves as a major platform for networking, introducing sustainability practices, and showcasing technological advancements. It helps businesses align with global ESG standards, crucial for attracting investors and maintaining competitiveness. The event also emphasizes the importance of adapting to regulatory trends and innovations to stay relevant in the evolving maritime sector, offering opportunities for companies to explore new technologies and business strategies for future-proofing their operations
